Kansas City, KS – Hyundai Crashes on I-670 Near 7th St Injuring One

Kansas City, KS (June 29, 2025) – A late-night crash on Interstate 670 Eastbound left one driver hospitalized after their vehicle struck a barrier and another car before spinning out again. The collision happened around 11:31 p.m. on June 27, just 0.4 miles east of 7th Street in Wyandotte County.

Reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol show that a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, driven by Nicole P. Calera Velazquez of Kansas City, Kansas, was traveling eastbound in lane one when the driver lost control for unknown reasons. The vehicle veered off to the left, colliding with the barrier wall before reentering traffic and striking another car in lane two. The Hyundai continued to spin, crashing into the barrier wall once more before coming to a stop.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly after the impact. Sunflower Tow Service was called to remove the severely damaged Sonata and transport it to a tow lot. The driver of the Hyundai was taken to KU Medical Center for further treatment. The second vehicle involved sustained damage, but no additional injuries were immediately reported. The crash is under investigation at this time.

We hope those injured in this wreck make a swift recovery.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Kansas City, KS - Hyundai Sonata Crashes on I670 Near 7th St Injuring OneMotor vehicle crashes like this one are unfortunately common across Kansas highways, especially during late-night hours. Kansas reports thousands of crashes every year, with many involving serious injuries or major vehicle damage. Staying cautious, avoiding fatigue, and driving at safe speeds can make a difference in keeping our roads safer for everyone.

Drivers should understand what contributes to single-vehicle and multi-vehicle crashes:

  • Driver Distraction: Even a moment of inattention can lead to a vehicle drifting out of its lane or losing control. Phones, in-car devices, or even drowsiness can be enough to cause a crash.
  • Fatigue: Late-night driving increases the risk of drowsiness behind the wheel. Drivers often underestimate how quickly exhaustion can set in, leading to slower reaction times and poor decision-making.
  • Road Conditions: Potholes, slick roads, or debris can make it easy for a driver to lose control. Maintaining a safe speed and staying alert to changing conditions can reduce this risk.
  • Vehicle Condition: Tire blowouts, worn brakes, or other mechanical issues are common factors in loss-of-control crashes. Regular maintenance is essential for safe driving.
  • Barrier Impact: Striking a barrier wall can cause a vehicle to rebound into traffic, creating dangerous secondary collisions. Understanding how to regain control safely can help prevent further impacts.
