Kansas City, MO – Teen Hurt in Rear-End Crash on SB I-470

Kansas City, MO (May 11, 2025) – A teenager was injured in a two-vehicle collision that occurred along southbound Interstate 470 during the evening rush hour on May 8. The crash happened near the 14.4 mile marker, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The incident unfolded at approximately 5:20 p.m. as traffic began to slow. A 2002 Dodge Ram, driven by a 20-year-old male from Raymore, had begun reducing speed in response to congestion. Behind him, a 2008 Chrysler Sebring, driven by a 16-year-old female, also from Raymore, was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of the Dodge.

The Sebring sustained extensive damage and had to be towed from the scene by Independence Specialty. The Dodge Ram was driven away with only minor damage. Authorities say all individuals involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

A 17-year-old female passenger in the Sebring suffered minor injuries. She was transported by Lee’s Summit Fire Department to Centerpoint Medical Center for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

Troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol were assisted at the scene by members of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The accident caused delays along the southbound lanes of I-470 as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate.

We hope the young passenger injured in this crash recovers quickly and fully.

Rear-End Accidents in Missouri

Kansas City, MO - Teen Injured in Rear-End Crash on SB 470In Missouri, rear-end collisions are a frequent cause of injury on highways and city streets alike. These accidents often occur when traffic slows unexpectedly or drivers follow too closely. According to MODOT, more than one in four Missouri crashes involve a rear-end impact, many resulting in preventable injuries.

When a crash like this happens, it’s helpful to understand how different elements of the accident may influence the injuries that result. Below is some information on common injury types that may follow this kind of crash:

  • Neck and Back Strain: Rear-end crashes often cause the body to jolt forward unexpectedly. This sudden movement can strain muscles, ligaments, and spinal discs, leading to discomfort or long-term pain. Even minor collisions can result in serious soft tissue injuries.
  • Airbag-Related Injuries: Airbags save lives, but they can also cause minor burns, abrasions, or bruising, especially to smaller passengers or those seated close to the dashboard. These injuries may require follow-up care depending on severity.
  • Knee and Leg Injuries: Occupants in the front seat may be thrown forward into the dashboard, which can injure knees, shins, or thighs. These types of injuries are especially common when the car comes to a sudden, hard stop.
  • Seatbelt Injuries: While seatbelts are vital for safety, they can cause bruising or rib injuries in a forceful crash. These injuries are typically minor but should still be evaluated by a medical professional.
  • Psychological Trauma: Especially for young drivers and passengers, a serious crash can lead to anxiety, trouble driving, or emotional distress after the incident. Support from family, counselors, and doctors is important in these situations.
