Kansas City, KS (August 12, 2026) – A Kansas City motorcycle accident involving three vehicles and a non-contact vehicle left a motorcycle rider injured Tuesday evening along Interstate 70 in Wyandotte County.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. on August 11 on westbound Interstate 70 near milepost 412.4 at the I-435 North exit. Investigators reported that a non-contact vehicle attempted to move into the exit lane before abruptly returning to the right lane after observing a pickup truck pulling a box trailer. That maneuver caused a chain reaction involving three vehicles traveling behind it.
Authorities stated that a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Trexin Witcher, 38, of Omaha, Nebraska, was traveling westbound in the right lane behind the non-contact vehicle. As traffic shifted, the Avalanche changed lanes into the middle lane and collided with a 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by Jared Peters, 40, of Edwardsville, Kansas. The motorcycle then entered the left lane, where it was struck by a 2015 Ford F-350 driven by Matthew Goodwin, 39, of Tonganoxie, Kansas.
Peters suffered injuries in the collision and was transported to KU Med for medical treatment. The Kansas Highway Patrol listed his injury severity as unknown. The Harley-Davidson sustained disabling damage and was removed from the scene by Pro-Tow.
Witcher was wearing a seat belt and was not reported to have been injured. His Chevrolet Avalanche sustained functional damage. Goodwin was also wearing a seat belt and was not injured. His Ford F-350 remained functional following the collision.
Investigators noted that the vehicle believed to have initiated the sequence of events did not make physical contact with any of the involved vehicles and was identified only as a non-contact vehicle. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
