Mound City, MO (September 19, 2026) – A Mound City car accident involving an overturned tanker and another vehicle sent several people to a hospital after a hazardous materials spill on Interstate 29 Thursday morning.
On September 17, authorities were called to I-29 approximately four miles south of the Mound City exit and five miles north of the Oregon exit. A tanker carrying a sulfuric acid mixture containing nitroglycerin overturned on the interstate before another vehicle struck it.
The crash released hazardous material, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that three or four people were transported to an area hospital after exposure to the resulting plume. Fog was present at the time, and authorities said the chemicals involved are reactive in water.
Homes and businesses within a one-mile radius were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. The Mound City School District also canceled classes Thursday because of the situation.
I-29 was temporarily shut down while authorities addressed the spill. After the evacuation, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and cleanup contractors used a drone to confirm that the tanker was no longer leaking. The tanker was emptied and returned upright.
The interstate later reopened, although one lane in each direction remained closed for cleanup. Crews used lime to absorb material remaining in the median, which will eventually need to be filled with dirt and reseeded. Drivers were asked to use caution while work continued.
