Sedgwick Co., KS – Man Hurt After Fusion vs Semi Crash on K96

Sedgwick County, KS (July 11, 2025) – An early morning crash involving a car and a propane-hauling semi-truck left one man hospitalized Thursday in Sedgwick County. According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 5:35 a.m. on July 10 along K96, just east of North 119th Street West.

Preliminary details reveal that a 2012 Silver Ford Fusion, driven by 30-year-old Dylan L. Howell of Burrton, was traveling eastbound in the right lane on K96 when it struck the rear of a 2016 Peterbilt semi-tractor. The Peterbilt, operated by Duane L. Pfaff, 59, of Ellinwood, was slowing down to make a right turn onto North 119th Street West when the impact occurred.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene quickly and transported Howell to St. Francis for further medical care. No injuries were reported for the semi-truck driver. The fully loaded propane tank was checked for leaks as a precaution, and traffic was temporarily affected while responders secured the area and cleared the wreckage.

Authorities with the Kansas Highway Patrol are investigating the circumstances that led up to the crash. Updates will be provided if further information becomes available regarding Howell’s condition or any potential charges.

We hope those injured in this accident recover swiftly.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Sedgwick County, KS - Man Injured After Fusion Rear-Ends Semi on K96In Kansas, car accidents are an everyday concern for drivers navigating highways, rural roads, and city streets alike. Recent traffic data shows that thousands of collisions happen each year statewide, many of which involve serious injuries or fatalities. Busy roadways like K96 often see increased risks when passenger vehicles share lanes with large commercial trucks.

Understanding the unique challenges drivers face can help prevent similar accidents in the future. Here are some common causes of car accidents that affect Kansas drivers:

  • Following Too Closely: Tailgating is a leading cause of rear-end collisions, especially at highway speeds. Maintaining a safe distance gives drivers enough time to react when the vehicle in front slows down or stops unexpectedly. Drivers should always adjust following distances for weather, traffic, and road conditions.
  • Failure to Yield: Improper turns and failure to yield when merging or exiting can result in high-impact crashes. This is especially true near highway junctions and intersections where multiple lanes merge and split.
  • Distracted Driving: Cell phones, in-car systems, or simply daydreaming can pull a driver’s attention from the road. Even a split second of distraction can lead to missing crucial changes in traffic flow, resulting in collisions.
  • Driving Too Fast for Conditions: Excessive speed remains one of the top factors in Kansas crashes. Drivers must reduce their speed in construction zones, poor weather, or heavy traffic to avoid losing control or causing severe impacts.
