Wyandotte Co., KS – Two-Vehicle Crash on U73 & Hollingsworth Rd

Wyandotte County, KS (July 3, 2025) – A two-vehicle accident left an elderly driver injured on U73 Highway at mile marker 20.5 near Hollingsworth Road on July 1. The collision occurred at around 2:23 p.m. when a 2011 Buick Lucerne, driven by 73-year-old Monty C. Drennon of Edwardsville, attempted to turn east onto Hollingsworth Road. According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Drennon’s vehicle failed to yield to oncoming traffic traveling northbound, leading to an angle collision with a 2016 Ram 1500.

The Ram 1500 was traveling north in lane 1 of U73 Highway when the Buick turned in front of it. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles and prompted an immediate emergency response. Drennon was transported by paramedics to Providence Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. There were no reports of additional injuries to the driver of the Ram 1500. No citations for hit-and-run or police pursuit were noted in the crash report.

Law enforcement from unit K35 is handling the ongoing investigation into this incident. Officers worked to clear the scene and manage traffic while ensuring that the injured driver received appropriate medical attention. Drivers in the area experienced brief delays as crews cleared debris and conducted their preliminary investigation.

We hope Mr. Drennon and anyone else affected by this accident recover quickly

Car Accidents in Kansas

Wyandotte Co., KS - Two-Vehicle Crash on U73 & Hollingsworth RdMotor vehicle accidents are a frequent concern in Kansas, with thousands occurring each year on highways, county roads, and city streets. Recent reports show that crashes involving a failure to yield account for a significant percentage of injury collisions across the state. While law enforcement continues to educate drivers, accidents like these highlight how critical it is to remain alert at intersections and when turning onto busy highways.

One key area drivers should keep in mind is understanding common causes of crashes in Kansas. Below are some insights to help residents stay safer on the road:

  • Failure to Yield Right-of-Way: Many accidents happen when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of approaching vehicles while making turns. It’s crucial to take the time to double-check all lanes before proceeding. A moment’s caution can prevent severe collisions like angle impacts, which often cause injuries.
  • Intersection Crashes: Busy intersections are among the most dangerous places on the road. Improper turns, running red lights, or ignoring stop signs often result in crashes. Defensive driving and patience at intersections can greatly reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Highway Speeds and Angle Collisions: Higher speeds on highways increase the force of any impact. Angle collisions, in particular, are among the most dangerous crash types due to the direct hit to a vehicle’s side. Drivers should exercise caution when crossing or turning onto highways, ensuring they have enough time to clear traffic safely.
  • Older Drivers and Roadway Risks: Older drivers may face challenges with visibility, reaction time, or judgment when turning or merging. Family members should ensure that loved ones receive regular check-ups and consider refresher driving courses to help maintain safe driving habits.
