Woman Injured in Car Accident on MO-92 in Smithville, MO

Smithville, MO (October 29, 2026) – A 20-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Tuesday afternoon, October 27, in a four-vehicle collision in Clay County. The Smithville car accident occurred around 4:40 p.m. on Missouri Route 92 at Century Drive.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred as two vehicles not involved in the crash were attempting to turn into private driveways on opposite sides of the roadway.

A 2015 Ford Edge, driven eastbound by a 17-year-old girl from Liberty, collided with the rear of an eastbound 2006 Ford Mustang. The impact pushed the Mustang into the westbound lane, where it struck a 2015 Ford Focus. The Focus then entered the eastbound lane and collided with a 2024 GMC Sierra. Meanwhile, the Ford Edge traveled off the north side of the road and struck a tree.

The Mustang driver, a 20-year-old woman from Excelsior Springs, sustained serious injuries. Northern Regional Ambulance District personnel transported her to North Kansas City Hospital for treatment. The other drivers were a 23-year-old woman from Kansas City operating the Focus and a 62-year-old man from Kearney driving the GMC Sierra. Neither was listed among the injured individuals in the patrol’s report.

The Ford Edge, Mustang, and Focus were all declared total losses. The GMC Sierra sustained moderate damage. All four vehicles were towed from the scene. Corporal B.R. Siercks of the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated the crash, assisted by Trooper D.D. Mullins and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department.

We hope the injured woman receives the care she needs and makes a full recovery.

Car Accidents in Missouri

Smithville Car Accident on MO-92 Leaves Woman InjuredA Smithville car accident involving several vehicles can create challenges that go beyond a typical two-car collision. When an initial impact pushes vehicles into opposing traffic lanes, multiple drivers and insurance policies may become part of the investigation.

For injured victims, identifying how each impact occurred can be important when determining responsibility and seeking compensation. Medical treatment, vehicle damage, and the long-term effects of serious injuries may also influence how an insurance claim is evaluated.

Frequently Asked Questions About Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Missouri

Can a driver be held responsible for injuries caused by a secondary collision?

Yes. A driver may be legally responsible for injuries resulting from a chain-reaction crash if the evidence establishes that their negligence caused those injuries. In a Smithville car accident involving several impacts, investigators may examine whether the initial collision caused another vehicle to enter oncoming traffic.

Responsibility is not determined solely by which vehicle made direct contact with the injured person. The sequence of events, available evidence, and actions of everyone involved can affect the outcome.

What happens when several insurance companies are involved in the same accident?

A multi-vehicle collision may involve separate claims under several automobile insurance policies. After a Smithville car accident, insurers may review police findings, vehicle damage, witness accounts, and statements from drivers before deciding how much responsibility to accept.

Disputes can arise when insurers disagree about which impact caused particular injuries or property damage. Missouri’s comparative fault rules may also affect how responsibility is divided. Injured individuals should carefully review settlement offers before accepting payment that could release further claims.

How does a total-loss vehicle affect a personal injury claim?

When an insurance company declares a vehicle a total loss, it generally means the vehicle meets the insurer’s or applicable state’s threshold for being uneconomical to repair. However, a total-loss determination does not automatically establish the severity of someone’s injuries.

In a Smithville car accident, property damage and bodily injury claims are evaluated separately. A victim may pursue compensation for qualifying medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other losses even after the vehicle’s value has been settled.
