Warsaw, MO (May 7, 2025) – A man riding a bicycle was injured Sunday afternoon after a collision with a car on United States Highway 65 at Missouri Route 83 in Benton County.

The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on May 4. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 40-year-old man on a Mongoose XR15 bicycle was heading northbound on the ramp from MO-83 to US-65. At the same time, a white Kia Stinger driven by a 44-year-old Columbia man was also traveling northbound on US-65 when the two collided.

The bicyclist, who is listed as homeless and was not wearing any safety gear, suffered minor injuries in the crash. He was taken to Bothwell Regional Health Center by Warsaw Lincoln Ambulance for further treatment. The driver of the Kia was not hurt and was able to drive his vehicle away from the scene. The car sustained only minor damage, while the bicycle was removed by a friend of the cyclist. Troopers were assisted by local authorities as they responded to the scene and worked to manage traffic in the area. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under review.

We hope the injured cyclist recovers quickly and fully.

Bicycle Accidents in Missouri

Warsaw, MO - Bicyclist Injured in Collision on US-65 at MO-83Bicyclists face high risks when sharing roads with motor vehicles, especially in Missouri, where infrastructure for cyclists is still catching up in many areas. The Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation notes that over 500 cyclists are injured annually in the state, with a portion of those injuries occurring in collisions with cars. Benton County, with its rural roadways and highway ramps, presents added dangers for cyclists who lack designated bike lanes or clear signage.

Below are several key factors that play into these types of accidents:

  • Limited Visibility on Ramps and Intersections: Highway ramps and connectors are particularly hazardous due to sharp curves and merging traffic. Drivers may not expect a bicycle in these areas, increasing the chance of collisions.
  • Lack of Protective Gear: Bicyclists who do not wear helmets or reflective gear are at higher risk for injury. Even minor crashes can result in serious consequences without protective equipment.
  • Misjudging Vehicle Speed: Cyclists may miscalculate the speed or distance of oncoming traffic, especially when entering a high-speed highway from a ramp. These judgment errors often lead to crashes.
  • No Dedicated Bike Lanes: Rural and suburban areas often lack safe spaces for cyclists. Without a designated lane, cyclists must ride on the shoulder or near traffic lanes, heightening the risk.
  • Inconsistent Driver Awareness: Some drivers do not check blind spots or look for cyclists before merging or turning. Lack of attention to non-motorized road users can quickly lead to dangerous situations.
