Topeka, KS – Three Motorcycles Crash on I-70 Near US 75 On-Ramp

Topeka, KS (June 30, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a multi-motorcycle crash that happened on Interstate 70 Westbound near milepost 357.8 at around 1:24 p.m. on June 28. The incident occurred just 0.2 miles from the U.S. Highway 75 Southbound on-ramp to Interstate 70 Westbound. According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, three motorcycles were involved when a Yamaha rider failed to maintain a safe distance and struck the rear of another motorcycle.

Authorities say a 1993 Yamaha driven by Keith D. Edwards, 54, of Topeka, was following too closely while merging onto I-70 Westbound from U.S. Highway 75 Southbound. The Yamaha struck the rear of a 2011 Harley Davidson operated by Ronnie E. Pummill, 54, of Topeka. A third motorcycle, a 1998 Harley Davidson ridden by Jay C. Joynt, 57, of Topeka, was unable to avoid the initial collision and collided with the Yamaha.

Emergency responders treated Jay C. Joynt for injuries at the scene and transported him to Stormont Vail for further medical care. Neither Keith Edwards nor Ronnie Pummill was reported to have visible injuries at the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the sequence of events and any contributing factors that led to this crash.

We hope those injured in this accident recover swiftly.

Motorcycle Accidents in Kansas

Topeka, KS - Three Motorcycles Collide on I70 Near U75 On-RampMotorcycle accidents are an unfortunate reality on Kansas roadways. According to state data, motorcyclists account for a notable percentage of traffic-related injuries and deaths each year. These crashes often occur on highways and interstates where merging traffic and high speeds increase the risk of serious injuries. Riders in Kansas are urged to always maintain a safe distance and remain vigilant while sharing the road with other vehicles.

When considering the risks faced by motorcyclists, it helps to understand the most common injuries that can result from a motorcycle crash:

  • Head Injuries: Traumatic brain injuries are one of the leading causes of death among motorcyclists. Helmets significantly reduce this risk but cannot prevent all head trauma. Riders should invest in high-quality, DOT-approved helmets and replace them after any significant impact.
  • Road Rash: When a rider is thrown from a motorcycle, sliding across the pavement can cause severe abrasions known as road rash. These injuries often require skin grafts and may lead to long-term scarring. Protective riding gear can help minimize this risk.
  • Broken Bones: Arms, legs, and wrists are particularly vulnerable during motorcycle crashes. The force of a collision or impact with the pavement can easily cause fractures. Prompt treatment and rehabilitation are important for recovery and to prevent permanent mobility issues.
  • Spinal Injuries: Back and neck injuries can be life-changing for motorcyclists. Even with proper gear, the impact forces involved can cause herniated discs, fractures, or paralysis. Riders should prioritize defensive driving to avoid sudden stops or collisions that can cause spinal trauma.
