The crash occurred at approximately 7:49 p.m. on August 30 near mile marker 166.8 on southbound I-335. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2018 Nissan Sentra and a 1998 Western Star 4900E collided while traveling southbound on the Kansas Turnpike.

Authorities reported that the Nissan was traveling in the right lane before changing lanes. The two vehicles then collided, causing the truck to become perpendicular to southbound traffic.

Kay Frakes, 88, of Kettering, Ohio, was driving the Nissan. She suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment. Wanda Molen, 84, of Centerville, Ohio, was riding as a passenger in the Nissan. She also suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital.

The Western Star was driven by Gale Juel, 78, of Mullinville, Kansas. Juel reported possible injuries and was wearing a safety restraint. The report indicates that all three adults involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
