Car Accident in Douglas County, KS on K-10 Near U.S. 59

Douglas County, KS (May 23, 2026) – A Topeka car accident involving three vehicles left a woman and two young children in critical condition on Wednesday night along Kansas Highway 10.

The crash was reported to the Topeka Police Department at around 9:45 p.m. on May 21 near the U.S. Highway 59/Iowa Street interchange. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, a 36-year-old Edwardsville woman driving a white Kia Optima was traveling westbound on K-10 when her vehicle entered the eastbound lanes just west of the U.S. 59/Iowa Street exit.

At the same time, a 22-year-old Olathe man driving a white Ford F-150 was traveling eastbound. Authorities say the driver of the pickup attempted to avoid a collision by steering into the westbound lane. However, as the Kia driver corrected back into the westbound lane, the two vehicles collided head-on.

A black Toyota Camry driven by a 19-year-old woman then struck the passenger side of the Ford F-150 after it came to rest.

The 22-year-old Olathe man and the 19-year-old Camry driver were evaluated at the scene and were not transported. The 36-year-old Edwardsville woman and two children, ages 1 and 2, who were passengers in the Kia, were taken to Kansas City-area hospitals for emergency treatment. Officials reported that the woman and both children remain in critical condition.

Authorities continue to investigate the contributing factors of the crash.

Our thoughts are with the injured woman and the two children as they fight toward recovery.
