Sweet Springs, MO – Wrong-Way Crash on I-70 Kills One, Injures Another

Sweet Springs, MO (May 2, 2025) – A head-on collision on eastbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 64.8 claimed the life of a 72-year-old man and seriously injured another driver on the night of April 29. The crash occurred around 9:00 p.m. in Saline County and led to a major emergency response, including air ambulance transport.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision took place when a westbound 2006 Hummer H2 crossed through the median and began traveling the wrong way on the interstate. The Hummer eventually came to a stop in the eastbound lanes, where it was struck head-on by an oncoming 2024 Subaru Crosstrek. Both vehicles were totaled in the impact.

The driver of the Hummer, a man from Florissant, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was transported by the Saline County Coroner. The Subaru driver, a 59-year-old man from St. Louis, was seriously injured and flown by air ambulance to Centerpoint Medical Center for treatment.

Several agencies assisted at the scene, including the Saline and Lafayette County Sheriff’s Departments, Sweet Springs Police Department, and multiple troopers and crash investigators. The crash remains under investigation.

Our hearts go out to the family of the man who lost his life and we wish the surviving driver a full recovery.

Car Accidents in Missouri

Sweet Springs, MO - Wrong-Way Crash on I-70 Kills One, Injures AnotherIn Missouri, highway accidents are a significant source of serious injuries and fatalities. Interstate 70, which stretches across the state, is frequently the site of high-speed crashes. According to Missouri traffic reports, wrong-way collisions—though rare—are among the deadliest. In 2023, over 950 people lost their lives in Missouri traffic accidents, with wrong-way crashes accounting for a small but tragic percentage.

It’s important to consider the many dangers that contribute to high-speed interstate collisions:

  • Wrong-Way Driving: These crashes often result in severe or fatal injuries due to the combined speed of both vehicles. They may stem from confusion, impairment, or medical emergencies. Road design and signage play roles, but so does driver attentiveness. Prevention requires vigilant highway monitoring and early detection.
  • Seatbelt Usage: Failing to wear a seatbelt significantly increases the chance of death in a crash. Missouri law requires seatbelt use, yet many fatal crashes involve unbelted occupants. Buckling up reduces the risk of death by nearly 45% in front-seat passenger vehicles.
  • Air Ambulance Transport: When serious injuries occur, patients may be flown to trauma centers. While this increases the chance of survival, it also means higher medical bills. Insurance may not cover the full cost, leaving victims with financial burdens after a crash.
  • Crash Reconstruction Teams: The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Major Crash Investigation Unit plays a vital role in understanding how severe accidents happen. Their work helps identify causes, whether it’s vehicle malfunction, human error, or road conditions.
