Sumner Co., KS – Polaris Ranger Rolls After Collision on U81

Sumner County, KS (June 27, 2025) – A Wednesday afternoon crash in Sumner County left one person injured when a Polaris Ranger overturned after a collision on U.S. Highway 81 near mile marker 8.8.

The accident occurred around 2:39 p.m. on June 25, as a 2024 Polaris Ranger 1500 was traveling eastbound and attempting to turn left off the highway. At the same time, a 2007 Dodge Ram, also heading eastbound, tried to pass the turning Polaris and struck its front driver’s side. The impact caused the Polaris to flip onto its side.

Three individuals were riding in the Polaris at the time of the crash. Pamela Gayle Lungren Sproul, a 70-year-old Caldwell resident, sustained injuries and was taken to Caldwell Regional Medical Center for further treatment. Two children, Keely Grace Atkins, 12, and Kylie Ruth Atkins, 8, both of Caldwell, were also in the vehicle but did not report any injuries.

All occupants were reportedly wearing safety restraints. According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision did not involve a hit-and-run or a police pursuit.

We hope those hurt in this wreck make a swift recovery.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Sumner County, KS - Polaris Ranger Rolls After Collision on U81Kansas sees thousands of motor vehicle crashes each year, many resulting in injuries that impact families and communities for years. In 2022 alone, Kansas reported over 50,000 accidents, including more than 13,000 with injuries. Road conditions, inattentive driving, and passing in unsafe zones contribute to many of these incidents.

When looking at what contributes to accidents in Kansas, here are some issues to consider:

  • Passing Errors: Unsafe passing, especially on highways, often leads to serious crashes. Misjudging the speed or distance of another vehicle while trying to pass can cause sideswipes or more severe impacts.
  • Left Turns Without Signals: A significant number of crashes happen when a driver turns left without properly signaling or checking for oncoming traffic. This miscommunication between drivers increases the risk of side-impact collisions.
  • Driver Inexperience: Particularly with younger drivers or those operating less conventional vehicles like UTVs or ATVs, a lack of experience can increase the likelihood of accidents. Proper training and supervision are key.
  • Rural Highway Hazards: Crashes on rural highways can be more dangerous due to higher speeds and limited visibility. Emergency response times may also be longer in these areas, which can affect outcomes for those injured.
  • Failure to Yield: This common issue arises when drivers do not give the right of way at intersections or during merging. It often causes confusion and results in preventable accidents.
  • Vehicle Type and Road Use: Operating vehicles like the Polaris Ranger 1500, typically used off-road, on public highways presents unique challenges, especially when interacting with standard road vehicles like trucks.
