Shawnee, KS – Injury DUI Crash on I-435 near Johnson Dr

Shawnee, KS (December 12, 2025) – A man from Gardner is in custody after causing an injury crash on Wednesday, December 10, along Interstate 435 in Shawnee. Authorities say the incident involved impaired driving, a hit-and-run, and multiple criminal charges.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. A 2014 Dodge Caravan traveled north on I-435 near Johnson Drive. Investigators said the driver entered the center median in an attempt to turn around on the interstate. As the vehicle moved back into traffic, it crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country minivan.

The Chrysler carried a woman and a seven-year-old girl. Authorities confirmed that they suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the collision caused damage and required an emergency response.

After the impact, the driver of the Dodge fled the scene on foot and ran into a nearby wooded area. Shawnee Police Department drone operators and a K9 unit responded to assist in the search. Officers located the suspect with help from the K9 unit later that evening.

Authorities continue reviewing this incident.

We wish the injured woman and child a full and rapid recovery.

Injury DUI Crash on I-435 near Johnson Dr

DUI-related crashes in Johnson County often lead to physical injuries, emotional stress, and unexpected financial burdens for victims and their families. Even when injuries are not life-threatening, the aftermath of an impaired driving crash can disrupt daily routines and create lasting challenges. Interstates see high speeds, which can increase the severity of injuries when a collision occurs.

Victims involved in DUI crash cases may have the right to seek compensation after an injury crash caused by a drunk driver. These claims aim to help injured individuals recover financially while they focus on healing. Each case depends on the facts, including the extent of injuries, property damage, and the actions of the at-fault driver.

Possible compensation victims may seek after a DUI injury crash includes:

  • Medical expenses, such as emergency care, hospital stays, follow-up visits, and rehabilitation
  • Future medical costs, when injuries require ongoing treatment or long-term care
  • Lost wages, covering time missed from work during recovery
  • Loss of earning capacity, if injuries affect the ability to return to the same job
  • Pain and suffering, addressing physical pain and emotional distress caused by the crash
  • Property damage, including vehicle repair or replacement costs
  • Out-of-pocket expenses, such as transportation or medical equipment needs

In cases involving repeat DUI offenses or reckless behavior, courts may also consider additional damages meant to hold the at-fault driver accountable. Hit-and-run actions can further strengthen a victim’s position when pursuing compensation.

Understanding these options early can help families plan for medical care and financial recovery. Documentation such as medical records, crash reports, and witness statements often plays a key role in these claims. Acting promptly helps ensure important deadlines are met.

Many victims choose to speak with a DUI accident lawyer after a DUI crash to better understand their rights and legal options. A lawyer can review crash reports, medical records, and insurance coverage to explain what compensation may be available.
