Riley Co., KS – 2 Pedestrians Struck in Crash on K18 EB

Riley County, KS (July 27, 2025) – Late Thursday night, emergency crews responded to a serious crash that left two pedestrians injured along K18 Eastbound near milepost 183.8, approximately half a mile east of K114. The incident occurred at around 11:35 p.m. on July 25 and involved a collision between two vehicles and two individuals who were outside their car.

According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, 18-year-old Trinity M. Sproul of Wamego was behind the wheel of a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer when she lost control while heading east on K18. Her vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with a 2007 Pontiac G6 that was parked with hazard lights activated. The Pontiac then struck two pedestrians who were standing in front of it.

Both pedestrians sustained serious injuries. Koltyn T. Moore, 29, of Manhattan, Kansas, and Rod Marti, 40, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, were transported to Via Christi Manhattan for treatment. Their current conditions have not been released. Sproul, who reported pain following the crash, was also evaluated for injuries. Authorities are continuing their investigation. No charges have been announced at this time.

We hope those injured in this accident recover swiftly.

Pedestrian Accidents in Kansas

Riley County, KS - 2 Pedestrians Struck in Crash on K18 EastboundKansas sees its share of pedestrian-related crashes every year, particularly along highways and rural roads where visibility and road shoulders are limited. According to state data, pedestrian accidents remain a critical safety concern, especially during nighttime hours. In 2023 alone, Kansas reported over 250 pedestrian crashes, many of which resulted in serious or fatal injuries.

Here’s a closer look at some contributing factors that make pedestrian accidents more likely and why awareness is so important:

  • Nighttime Visibility: Reduced visibility after dark increases the chance of accidents. Even with hazard lights or reflective clothing, drivers often struggle to see pedestrians until it’s too late. Highway shoulders are especially hazardous at night.
  • Improperly Parked Vehicles: Vehicles stopped on the side of the road, even with flashers on, create unexpected obstacles. Other drivers may not anticipate these vehicles and may not react in time.
  • Driver Inexperience or Speeding: Younger or inexperienced drivers might struggle with sudden changes on the road. Speed also reduces the driver’s ability to stop in time when a situation arises unexpectedly.
  • Distraction Behind the Wheel: Mobile devices and in-car distractions take attention off the road. Even a few seconds of looking away can lead to a crash, especially in areas where pedestrians are present.
  • Poor Road Conditions or Layout: Certain roadways, especially in rural areas, may lack safe areas for pedestrians to stand or walk, putting them in direct danger if vehicles leave the road.
