Topeka, KS (July 2, 2026) – A fatal car accident in Topeka claimed the life of 28-year-old Dakota J. Bacon late Wednesday afternoon along US-24 near N.W. Huxman Road.
According to reports from the Topeka Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 4:11 p.m. on July 1 along the highway just east of Silver Lake. Authorities say a 2025 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, driven by James D. Ulmer, 50, of Leavenworth, was traveling eastbound and attempting to pass vehicles on the two-lane roadway. During the maneuver, the truck collided head-on with a westbound Kia Soul.
The Kia was driven by 28-year-old Dakota J. Bacon of Topeka. Despite wearing a seat belt, Bacon sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Kia, 28-year-old William C. Robertson III, also of Topeka, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment. He was also reportedly wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Ulmer, the driver of the Dodge Ram, sustained suspected minor injuries and was also taken to Stormont Vail Hospital. Emergency crews remained at the scene for several hours, and a portion of US-24 was closed until around 9:00 p.m. while officials worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the incident.
