Peabody, KS – One Killed, One Hurt in US-50 Hwy & Nighthawk Rd Crash

Peabody, KS (July 14, 2025) – Tragedy struck Saturday evening when a collision involving a car and a semitrailer claimed one life and left another person hurt in Marion County. Reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol show the crash happened around 6:09 p.m. on July 12 at the intersection of US-50 Highway and Nighthawk Road in Peabody.

Authorities shared that a 2022 Lincoln Nautilus sport utility vehicle was heading south on Nighthawk Road but failed to yield at a stop sign. As it entered the intersection, the Lincoln collided with an eastbound 2024 Freightliner semitrailer on US-50 Highway. The impact caused severe damage to the Lincoln.

Tragically, the passenger in the Lincoln, identified as 92-year-old Dorothy F. Conyers of Marion, lost her life at the scene. The driver, Ronald D. Ludwig, also 92, of Florence, survived the crash with suspected minor injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and care. According to the patrol, both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The semitrailer driver, Dennis E. Smith, 35, of Nampa, Idaho, did not sustain any injuries. He was the sole occupant in the Freightliner and was also properly restrained. Local authorities spent several hours at the intersection to investigate and clear the wreckage. This incident serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change on the roadways.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
