Overland Park Car Accident on I-35 Injures Two

Overland Park, KS (October 10, 2026) – Two people were injured Thursday night after a pickup truck sideswiped a passenger car on Interstate 35 in Johnson County. The Overland Park car accident occurred at approximately 10:28 p.m. on October 8 in the northbound lanes of I-35 near mile marker 226.4, just north of US-69.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2016 Ram 1500 driven by 64-year-old Randall Lee Livingston of Spring Hill, Missouri, was traveling northbound in the third lane of I-35.

A 2016 Toyota Corolla driven by 22-year-old Michael Steve Flores-Orellana of Overland Park was traveling northbound in the fourth lane.

Investigators reported that Livingston changed lanes into the fourth lane and sideswiped the Toyota. The impact caused the Corolla to lose control and strike the barrier wall on the right side of the interstate.

Flores-Orellana suffered suspected minor injuries and was transported to AdventHealth Shawnee Mission for treatment.

A passenger in the Toyota, 35-year-old Karla Esmeralda Flores-Orellana of Overland Park, also suffered suspected minor injuries. She was transported to AdventHealth Shawnee Mission for medical care.

Livingston was not reported injured. All three people involved in the collision were wearing seat belts.

The Toyota Corolla was removed from the scene by PK Towing. The Kansas Highway Patrol investigated the collision.

We hope both people injured in this crash make full recoveries.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Two Injured in Overland Park Car Accident on I-35An Overland Park car accident involving an unsafe lane change can cause drivers to lose control, especially on busy interstate highways. Vehicles traveling in adjacent lanes may have limited space to avoid a collision when another motorist moves into their path. Side-impact crashes can also send vehicles into barriers, guardrails, or surrounding traffic. Investigators often examine lane positioning, vehicle damage, witness statements, and roadway evidence to determine how these collisions occurred and who may be responsible.

Who Is Responsible When a Driver Sideswipes Another Vehicle?

Determining responsibility for an Overland Park car accident involving a lane change generally requires examining whether the merging driver made sure the adjacent lane was clear.

Kansas drivers must follow applicable lane-use rules and exercise reasonable care when changing lanes. Investigators may examine turn signals, blind spots, vehicle positions, and whether either driver had an opportunity to avoid the collision.

Evidence such as dash camera footage, witness statements, and damage to the vehicles can help establish what happened. When one driver’s negligence causes another vehicle to leave its lane and strike a barrier, that driver may be responsible for the resulting injuries and losses.

What Injuries Can Occur When a Car Strikes a Highway Barrier?

An Overland Park car accident involving a secondary impact with a concrete barrier can expose occupants to forces from more than one direction.

The initial sideswipe may cause sudden lateral movement, while the subsequent barrier impact can create another abrupt change in speed or direction. These forces may result in neck injuries, back injuries, concussions, shoulder injuries, or soft tissue damage.

Even when injuries are initially classified as minor, symptoms may change over the following days. Medical evaluations and follow-up care can help identify problems that were not immediately apparent at the scene.

Can Passengers File Injury Claims After a Sideswipe Collision?

Passengers injured in an Overland Park car accident may have grounds to pursue compensation when another driver’s negligence caused their injuries.

Unlike drivers, passengers generally have no control over the movements of the vehicles involved. Their claims typically focus on determining which driver or drivers contributed to the collision.

Depending on the circumstances, passengers may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other qualifying losses. Available insurance coverage and Kansas comparative fault rules can affect how these claims are handled.

What Evidence Can Help Prove an Unsafe Lane Change?

Evidence from an Overland Park car accident can help establish whether a driver entered another lane without sufficient clearance.

Investigators may review the location of vehicle damage, photographs of the roadway, tire marks, witness accounts, and available traffic camera recordings. The final positions of the vehicles may also help explain the sequence of events.

A police accident report can provide important information about the drivers, vehicles, injuries, and investigating agency.

Preserving evidence early can be particularly important when a vehicle has been towed or repaired following the collision.
