Leavenworth Co., KS – Pickup Truck and Tractor Crash on K-15 Hwy Sends 1 to Hospital

Leavenworth County, KS (September 15, 2025) – A crash involving a pickup truck and a farm tractor sent one person to the hospital on Sunday afternoon, September 14, in Leavenworth County. The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed the collision occurred around 2:00 p.m. on K-15 Highway.

Troopers reported that both vehicles were heading westbound when the crash occurred. A New Holland tractor, pulling a farm implement, began turning into a driveway. At the same time, a Dodge Dakota pickup truck attempted to pass in the left lane. The pickup struck the tractor on its side, causing the tractor to overturn onto its passenger side.

The pickup came to rest lodged between the overturned tractor and the implement it was hauling. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and provided aid.

The tractor’s driver, 75-year-old Floyd Wood of McLouth, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. The pickup’s driver, 15-year-old Macey Schempp of Bonner Springs, was not seriously hurt.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and required towing. Authorities remained at the crash site for several hours to investigate and clear the scene. The Kansas Highway Patrol has not released additional details but confirmed the investigation is ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we wish them a complete recovery.

Truck and Tractor Accidents in Kansas

Crashes involving tractors and passenger vehicles are a concern in rural Kansas, where agricultural equipment often shares the road with cars and trucks.

These accidents tend to be serious due to the difference in size and speed between tractors and passenger vehicles. Several factors commonly contribute to collisions like this last one reported:

  • Limited visibility – Tractors are large and may obstruct the view of other drivers, especially when pulling equipment. Their slower speeds can also catch drivers off guard.
  • Passing errors – Passenger vehicles may try to pass tractors without enough space or at unsafe times, increasing the risk of side impacts or head-on crashes.
  • Turns into driveways or fields – Tractors often need wide turning space. Drivers who are unfamiliar with rural traffic may not anticipate these maneuvers.
  • Speed differences – Tractors travel much slower than cars, leading to sudden braking or risky passing attempts when faster-moving traffic encounters them.
  • Driver inexperience – Younger or less experienced drivers may not know how to safely share the road with farm equipment, leading to poor judgment behind the wheel.

Understanding these risks is critical for preventing similar crashes. Both farmers and drivers must stay aware and cautious on highways where agricultural equipment is present.

Victims of these types of accidents may face serious injuries and lengthy recoveries. Seeking legal guidance from a diligent truck accident lawyer can help ensure that their rights are protected and that they receive the compensation they deserve.
