Lafayette, MO (December 23, 2024) – A collision involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 70 eastbound at mile marker 54 left two individuals injured late Friday night, December 20.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred at approximately 11:34 p.m. when a 2018 Peterbilt 579, traveling eastbound, veered off the left side of the roadway into the median. The truck rotated clockwise, crossed into the westbound lanes, and struck a 2024 Freightliner Cascadia. The Peterbilt came to rest on its side, facing west, while the Freightliner stopped on the right shoulder.
The driver of the Peterbilt, a 28-year-old man from Houston, Texas, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Research Medical Center in Kansas City. An occupant of the same vehicle, a 26-year-old man from Kansas City, Missouri, sustained injuries and was transported by Sweet Springs Fire to Centerpoint Hospital in Independence. The Freightliner’s driver, a 61-year-old man from Newton, Alabama, was uninjured. Assistance was provided by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and multiple troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The crash remains under investigation.
