Kansas City, MO – One Killed, Two Critically Injured in Four-Vehicle Crash on I-70 at Stadium Dr

Kansas City, MO (February 18, 2026) – One person died and two others suffered critical injuries in a four-vehicle crash Tuesday evening, February 17, on Interstate 70 near the Truman Sports Complex.

The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on eastbound I-70 near Stadium Drive, close to Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department responded to the scene during heavy rush-hour traffic.

Investigators said a silver Nissan Altima traveled east on I-70 and failed to stop for congested traffic ahead. The Altima struck the rear of a black Nissan full-size van, which triggered a chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles. The force of the impact caused serious damage and left multiple people hurt.

Emergency crews found one passenger with fatal injuries and pronounced that person dead at the scene. Paramedics transported two other individuals to a local hospital with critical injuries. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and wish strength and healing to those injured.

Who Can Legally File a Claim After a Fatal Accident in Missouri? One Killed, Two Critically Injured in Four-Vehicle Crash on I-70 at Stadium Dr

In Missouri, specific family members have the legal right to file a wrongful death claim after a fatal accident. State law allows a surviving spouse, children, or grandchildren of the deceased to file first. If none of those relatives are available, parents of the deceased may bring the claim.

Missouri law places eligible family members into classes. The first class includes the spouse, children, and grandchildren. If no one in that group files a claim, the right may pass to parents or siblings. In some situations, a court may appoint a plaintiff ad litem to pursue the claim if no close relatives step forward.

A wrongful death claim seeks financial recovery for losses tied to the fatal collision. These damages may include funeral expenses, medical bills related to the final injury, lost income, and the value of companionship and support the person provided. Missouri law allows juries to consider both economic and non-economic losses when evaluating damages.

Timing also matters. Missouri generally sets a three-year statute of limitations for wrongful death claims. Filing within that window is critical, as courts may dismiss cases filed after the deadline.

A Missouri wrongful death attorney can review family relationships, explain who qualifies to file, and outline what compensation may be available under Missouri law.
