Kansas City, MO – One Injured in Rear-End Crash on I-70 WB

Kansas City, MO (August 24, 2025) – A crash on Interstate 70 left one man injured after two vehicles collided in congested traffic Friday afternoon.

On August 22, at around 4:25 p.m., officers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to a crash near the 21.0 mile marker of westbound I-70 in Jackson County. Reports show that a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer had come to a stop due to traffic when it was rear-ended by a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado. The driver of the Silverado, a 36-year-old man from Oak Grove, reportedly became distracted and was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.

Both vehicles sustained total damage and were towed from the scene. The Blazer was removed by Jackson County Tow, while Elite handled the Silverado. The driver of the Blazer, a 61-year-old man from Bates City, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He sustained injuries and was transported to North Kansas City Hospital by Central Jackson County Fire Protection. The Silverado’s driver’s safety device use was not known at the time of reporting.

Trooper A.K. Booker led the investigation, with assistance from Corporal C.L. Purnell and local emergency crews. Traffic in the area was affected as responders cleared the scene and treated the injured.

We hope the injured man makes a full and smooth recovery.

Car Accidents in Missouri

Kansas City, MO - One Injured in Rear-End Crash on I-70 WestboundMissouri highways see a high volume of traffic accidents each year. Interstate 70 is one of the state’s busiest routes, often becoming congested, especially during peak travel times. According to data from Missouri authorities, hundreds of injury crashes happen annually on this stretch of roadway, making it a consistent area of concern for both safety officials and drivers.

This crash highlights how easily accidents can happen when attention is diverted. Below are some key factors that often play a role in rear-end collisions like this one:

  • Driver Distraction: Even a moment of distraction – looking at a phone, adjusting a control, or glancing at something outside – can prevent a driver from reacting in time. Distracted driving continues to be one of the most reported causes in crashes across Missouri.
  • Congested Traffic: Stop-and-go conditions require drivers to stay alert and responsive. Sudden slowdowns or stops can lead to crashes if drivers don’t maintain proper following distances.
  • Older Vehicle Limitations: Vehicles like the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado may lack modern braking systems or safety technologies, which can increase stopping distance or reduce collision avoidance.
  • Delayed Reaction Times: Fatigue, stress, or inattentiveness can slow a driver’s response. In high-traffic areas, even a split second can make the difference between stopping safely and hitting another vehicle.
  • Visibility Issues: Weather, sun glare, or blind spots can obscure traffic patterns. When drivers can’t see ahead clearly, they may not react in time to avoid a crash.
