Kansas City, MO – Officer Hurt After Being Rear-Ended on I-29 Near NW Waukomis Dr

Kansas City, MO (October 13, 2025) – A Shoal Creek Division police officer was seriously injured on Saturday morning, October 11, after another vehicle struck his patrol car during a traffic stop north of Kansas City.

According to Capt. Jake Becchina of the Kansas City Police Department, the crash occurred just after midnight on the northbound bridge of Interstate 29 near NW Waukomis Drive. The officer was assisting a DUI unit and sitting inside a blue Dodge Durango patrol vehicle parked on the left shoulder of the highway with its emergency lights flashing.

Moments later, a blue Kia Forte traveling north at high speed slammed into the back of the police SUV. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles and left the officer with serious injuries. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to provide medical aid. Paramedics transported both the officer and the Kia driver to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police confirmed that the injured officer has since been released from the hospital and continues to recover from his injuries at home. Authorities have not yet released his identity or the name of the Kia driver.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Kansas City Police and Shoal Creek officers, assisted in closing the affected lanes while investigators examined the scene. The crash remains under active investigation to determine whether speed, impairment, or distraction played a role.

We extend our best wishes to the injured officer for a full and speedy recovery.

Car Accidents in Kansas City

Accidents involving law enforcement officers serve as a powerful reminder of how dangerous roadside incidents can be. Even when emergency vehicles are clearly marked and equipped with flashing lights, inattentive or impaired drivers can cause devastating collisions.

This recent crash is one example of why Kansas personal injury law plays such a vital role in helping victims recover physically and financially after severe accidents.

Under Kansas and Missouri law, individuals injured by another driver’s negligence may pursue compensation for their losses. This compensation can include reimbursement for medical expenses, hospital stays, and physical therapy, as well as lost income due to time away from work.

Victims may also seek compensation for pain and suffering, emotional distress, and long-term effects of serious injuries such as neck, spine, or brain trauma.

Police officers and first responders face heightened risk on highways and interstates, where high-speed traffic and low visibility can turn a simple stop into a life-threatening situation. When negligent or reckless drivers cause harm, the victims—whether officers or civilians—deserve full legal protection and fair compensation for the damages they suffer.
