Kansas City, MO – Multiple Teens Injured in I-29 Church Bus Crash

Kansas City, MO (August 30, 2025) – A serious accident involving a church school bus brought traffic to a standstill Friday afternoon on Interstate 29, about halfway between Kansas City and St. Joseph. According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 3:35 p.m. on August 29.

The bus, owned by Olivet Baptist Church of Westwood, Kansas, was carrying around 30 students headed to a volleyball and soccer event in St. Joseph when the accident happened. Authorities say a front tire blew out while the bus was traveling northbound. Shortly after, a rear tire also failed, causing the driver to lose control. The bus veered off the interstate, struck a ditch, and overturned.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, nine people were hurt in the crash. Two teenagers — a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl — sustained serious injuries. A 44-year-old woman on board suffered moderate injuries. Six others suffered minor injuries. Among the injured, five were taken to North Kansas City Hospital, and three were transported to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph for treatment.

The bus driver, a 61-year-old man, was not injured. By 6:30 p.m., the wreck had been cleared, and traffic resumed on Interstate 29.

We hope those injured in this accident recover swiftly.

Bus Accidents in Missouri

Kansas City, MO - Multiple Teens Injured in I-29 Church Bus CrashBus accidents in Missouri may not be as frequent as car collisions, but when they occur, they often involve multiple injuries and significant emergency response efforts. According to state transportation data, commercial or group transport vehicles are involved in hundreds of reported crashes each year. These incidents often result in both physical and emotional challenges for those involved.

When a bus crash occurs, there are many factors that may come into play. Here are a few important aspects families should be aware of:

  • Tire Failure: When a bus experiences a blowout at highway speeds, it can lead to catastrophic results. Tire maintenance and inspection are critical, especially for larger vehicles carrying many passengers.
  • Driver Fatigue or Error: Long-distance bus trips often require alertness and attentiveness. Even the most experienced drivers can make errors under stress or fatigue.
  • Inadequate Safety Restraints: Many buses lack seat belts for passengers, increasing the risk of injury during rollovers or crashes.
  • Vehicle Maintenance Records: Bus companies are required to maintain their vehicles according to strict safety standards. Failure to do so could make them liable in the event of a crash.
  • Emergency Response Time: When buses crash in rural or remote areas, the time it takes for first responders to reach the scene can affect the outcome for injured victims.
