Kansas City, KS – Police Chase Ends in Crash on State Ave

Kansas City, KS (July 24, 2025) – A police pursuit through Kansas City ended in a crash that left one person injured Tuesday afternoon. Authorities responded to the scene around 2:28 p.m. on July 22, following a crash involving two vehicles near 3737 State Avenue, just east of 38th Street.

According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2009 Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on State Avenue while being pursued by law enforcement. At the same time, a 2001 Mercury Villager, driven by 28-year-old Keyronta Betts of Junction City, had just completed a left turn onto eastbound State Avenue from southbound 38th Street. The Camry, driven by 20-year-old Alexander Osorio-Guzman of Kansas City, struck the rear of Betts’ vehicle.

The impact pushed the Mercury Villager onto the sidewalk, where it came to rest on its wheels. The Toyota Camry also came to a stop upright but remained in the lane of travel. Emergency personnel quickly arrived and transported Betts to Providence Medical Center for treatment. Osorio-Guzman was not reported to have any injuries.

The circumstances leading up to the pursuit have not been disclosed. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Kansas City, KS – Police Chase Ends in Crash on State AveCar crashes in Kansas remain a major concern for drivers statewide. Each year, thousands of collisions occur on city streets and highways throughout Kansas, often leaving victims with serious injuries or worse. Police pursuits can add a layer of unpredictability, sometimes putting innocent motorists in harm’s way.

When discussing what drivers in Kansas should know, it’s helpful to look at important safety-related issues, especially those involving reckless driving.

  • High-Speed Pursuits: Accidents involving police chases often occur at elevated speeds. These situations increase the likelihood of injury for both suspects and bystanders. In some cases, people with no involvement in the chase become unintended victims.
  • Rear-End Collisions: These are among the most common types of accidents, especially during unpredictable movements like sudden lane changes or unexpected stops. They often cause injuries to the neck, spine, or back.
  • Urban Traffic Flow: Busy intersections in populated areas, like State Avenue, are hotspots for collisions due to frequent merging and turning. Awareness and slower speeds can reduce risks.
  • Liability in Pursuits: When police chases result in crashes, determining who is legally responsible can be complicated. Victims might have the right to seek compensation beyond the at-fault driver.
  • Injury Recovery: Even moderate accidents can lead to long-term injuries. Many victims need physical therapy, ongoing treatment, or time off work during recovery.
  • Importance of Witnesses: Statements from nearby drivers or pedestrians can help clarify how a crash occurred. Witness accounts often influence how insurance claims or legal cases proceed.
