Johnson Co., MO – Two Injured in Serious Crash on MO 23 S near Rt Y

Johnson County, MO (January 6, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash on Monday, January 5, left two drivers injured on a rural highway in Johnson County, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol. The collision occurred around 6:11 a.m. along Missouri Route 23, south of Route Y.

The crash involved a 2010 Kenworth truck and a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and required towing from the scene. Law enforcement officers and emergency responders arrived shortly after the collision to assist the drivers and begin documenting what happened.

A 54-year-old woman from Windsor, Missouri, suffered serious injuries in the crash. Emergency crews transported her to Research Medical Center for treatment. The second driver, a 32-year-old man from Knob Noster, Missouri, reported minor injuries.

Investigators stated that both drivers attempted to steer back toward the center in an effort to avoid impact. Despite these actions, the front of one vehicle struck the front of the other.

The force of the collision caused one vehicle to travel off the roadway and strike an embankment. The other vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane.

Both drivers were wearing safety devices at the time of the crash. Deputies with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene while officers gathered evidence and assessed roadway conditions.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue reviewing the circumstances of the crash.

We hope those injured have a steady healing during recovery.

Possible Causes of Crossover and Head-On Crashes in MissouriTwo Injured in Serious Crash on MO 23 S near Rt Y

Crossover and head-on crashes on Missouri highways often result from a combination of roadway, driver, and environmental factors. Because these collisions involve direct impact, they frequently lead to serious injuries.

Possible causes that investigators often examine include:

  • Driver fatigue, especially during early morning hours when alertness may be reduced
  • Distraction, such as looking away from the road, adjusting controls, or using a phone
  • Speed, which limits reaction time and increases crash severity
  • Poor visibility, including low light conditions, fog, or glare from the sun
  • Roadway design issues, such as narrow lanes, limited shoulders, or unclear lane markings
  • Sudden steering corrections, which can cause loss of control at higher speeds
  • Mechanical problems, including tire failures or steering issues
  • Impairment, whether from alcohol, drugs, or certain medications

In many cases, investigators review vehicle data, crash reports, and physical evidence to determine which factors played a role. Even a brief lapse in attention or control can have severe consequences on two-lane highways without physical barriers.

After a serious crash, injured victims often face hospital stays, follow-up care, and time away from work. These challenges can quickly become overwhelming. Many people choose to speak with a Johnson County car accident lawyer to better understand their rights and options after a serious roadway collision.
