Authorities were dispatched to the crash scene at approximately 4:43 p.m. on June 22 at the southbound I-29 exit ramp to northbound I-35. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision involved a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe and a 2009 GMC Yukon.

Investigators reported that the Hyundai was traveling behind the GMC when traffic slowed. The Hyundai subsequently struck the rear of the Yukon, causing damage to both vehicles.

The Hyundai was driven by a 22-year-old woman from Raytown, Missouri. The GMC was operated by a 49-year-old man from Kansas City, Missouri. Both drivers were reported to have been wearing safety restraints at the time of the collision.
