Independence, MO (March 5, 2026) – One person died, and two others suffered serious injuries after a head-on crash on Wednesday evening, March 4, on Noland Road in Independence.
Emergency units responded shortly after 5:40 p.m. to reports of a major accident along the southbound lanes of Noland Road, just north of 35th Street near Truman High School. Responders arrived and located two heavily damaged vehicles involved in a head-on collision.
The Independence Police said the crash occurred when a van traveling north crossed the center line and entered the southbound lanes. The van then struck a truck that was traveling southbound on Noland Road.
The two vehicles collided head-on with significant force. Emergency responders quickly began assisting those involved in the crash and assessing injuries at the scene. Police identified the driver of the van as 42-year-old Darnell Johnson. He died at the scene as a result of injuries suffered in the collision.
Two people inside the truck suffered serious injuries during the accident. Paramedics transported both victims to nearby hospitals for further medical care.
Investigators spent several hours documenting the crash site and gathering information. The collision blocked portions of southbound Noland Road while crews worked in the area. Traffic remained restricted for several hours as responders assisted the injured and investigators reviewed the scene. Authorities reopened the roadway around 9:30 p.m.
Officials continue to examine the events that led to the crash. The investigation remains active.
