Topeka, KS (May 20, 2026) – A Topeka car accident involving four vehicles left multiple people injured Monday afternoon along Interstate 70 in Shawnee County. The crash occurred at approximately 3:18 p.m. on May 18 near milepost 363.8 eastbound, about a tenth of a mile west of California Avenue.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, traffic on I-70 eastbound was slowing due to active construction in the area. A 2018 Nissan Altima driven by Maria D. Olivares-Lopez, 45, of Stockton, California, reduced speed as traffic backed up. A 2025 Chevrolet Silverado driven by David M. Ross, 66, of Johnstown, Colorado, then struck the rear of the Altima. A 2022 Nissan Frontier driven by Jason W. Stowe, 50, of Meriden, Kansas, rear-ended the Silverado, causing it to spin and face westbound in the eastbound lanes. A fourth vehicle, a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia driven by Mohamed A. Mohamud, 35, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, then struck the Frontier.
David M. Ross sustained injuries in the Topeka car accident and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital. A 2-year-old passenger, Keyser Lennon of Johnstown, Colorado, was transported in an ambulance with Ross and reported no apparent injury. Jason W. Stowe was also transported to Stormont Vail Hospital with suspected minor injuries. Maria D. Olivares-Lopez and her passenger, Manuel L. Bustamante, 54, of Kent, Washington, reported no apparent injuries. All drivers and occupants were wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash.
The Freightliner was pulling a 2023 Hyundai trailer registered in Mississippi. Multiple vehicles were towed from the scene by A & R Towing, Browns Super Service, and Heartland Recovery. Traffic was impacted as crews worked to clear the construction zone and investigate the chain-reaction crash.
