Fort Scott, KS – Two Seriously Injured in Crash at 205th St and Osage Rd

Fort Scott, KS (July 25, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle accident near Fort Scott on the evening of July 23 sent two Kansas residents to Freeman Hospital in Joplin with significant injuries. Emergency crews were called to the scene around 6:44 p.m., where the collision occurred at the intersection of 205th Street and Osage Road, approximately two miles northwest of Fort Scott.

According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo was traveling west on Osage Road when it reached a stop sign at a “T” intersection with 205th Street. The driver of the Aveo, identified as 38-year-old Seth A. Uttinger of Fort Scott, failed to yield to a northbound 2018 Ram 2500 Pickup on 205th Street. The Aveo proceeded through the stop sign in an attempt to turn left onto southbound 205th Street when it was struck by the oncoming pickup.

Both Uttinger and his passenger, 41-year-old April M. Edwards of Fort Scott, sustained suspected serious injuries in the crash. They were transported by emergency responders to Freeman Hospital in Joplin for further treatment. The driver of the pickup, 20-year-old Charles B. Smith of Paulden, Arizona, was not injured in the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision to determine if any additional contributing factors played a role in the incident.

We hope those injured in this accident recover rapidly.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Fort Scott, KS - Two Seriously Injured in Crash at 205th St and Osage RdKansas experiences thousands of vehicle accidents each year, many of which result in serious injuries or fatalities. The Kansas Department of Transportation reports that intersections, especially rural ones without traffic signals, are a frequent site of crashes due to factors such as failure to yield, distracted driving, and limited visibility. In 2023, Bourbon County alone saw several injury-related crashes at rural intersections similar to this one.

When it comes to recovering after a crash, here are some helpful things to keep in mind:

  • Failure to Yield Accidents: These crashes often happen when one driver disregards a traffic control device or misjudges the speed of oncoming traffic. They can lead to side-impact collisions, which are known for causing serious injuries to passengers.
  • Intersection Safety: Rural intersections without traffic lights or stop signs for all directions are especially dangerous. Drivers unfamiliar with the area may not expect cross traffic, increasing the chances of a crash.
  • Side-Impact Collision Injuries: When a vehicle is struck from the side, the force of impact can cause major trauma to the chest, abdomen, hips, and head—especially for those sitting on the impacted side of the vehicle.
  • Transport to Trauma Centers: In severe injury cases like this one, patients are often taken to regional trauma centers, such as Freeman Hospital in Joplin, which are equipped to handle complex cases.
  • Crash Investigation Process: Law enforcement agencies, like the Kansas Highway Patrol, use measurements, eyewitness reports, and vehicle damage assessments to determine fault and whether charges should be filed.
