Topeka, KS (September 11, 2026) – A fatal pedestrian accident in Topeka claimed the life of 44-year-old Sarah J. McLaughlin-Olson on September 10 after she was struck while helping at the scene of an earlier crash on northbound US-75.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:18 p.m. on US-75 at milepost 152.4, about 0.73 miles south of the 57th St off-ramp in Shawnee County.
Authorities reported that an earlier crash had occurred in the southbound lanes of US-75. A 2021 Honda Civic driven by 41-year-old Amy R. Shotts of Wakarusa crossed the grassy median and came to rest on the left shoulder of northbound US-75. Several motorists stopped to assist, and one vehicle made contact with the Honda while it was on the shoulder.
Traffic began slowing as people stopped to provide assistance. An 18-year-old driver, Mason W. Allen of Decatur, Iowa, was approaching the area in a 2013 Ford F-350 that was pulling a 2001 Featherlite horse trailer. According to the crash report, Allen braked as vehicles ahead stopped and then veered left in an attempt to avoid traffic in the travel lanes.
The Ford struck the Honda on the left shoulder and also struck McLaughlin-Olson, who had stopped to help the driver of the Honda. McLaughlin-Olson suffered fatal injuries and was taken to the Shawnee County Coroner.
Shotts suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to Stormont Vail Health in Topeka for treatment.
Three passengers were traveling in the Ford with Allen: 20-year-old Mia K. Schutten of Minco, Oklahoma; 18-year-old Hadley L. Harris of New Market, Iowa; and 19-year-old Riley P. Taylor of Fort Scott, Kansas. Allen, Schutten, Harris, and Taylor were all listed as having no apparent injuries.
