Cimarron, KS – One Injured in Rear-End Crash on US 50 EB

Cimarron, KS (August 2, 2025) – A rear-end crash along U.S. Highway 50 just west of Cimarron left one man injured and sent to the hospital on the afternoon of July 31. The accident took place around 1:40 p.m. near milepost 103 in Gray County.

According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2016 Ford Transit Connect van was heading eastbound behind a 2021 Peterbilt truck. As the truck driver prepared to turn south onto an access road, the driver of the van, identified as 27-year-old Zachary W. Howarth of Dodge City, momentarily looked down to retrieve something from the vehicle floor. When he looked back up, the truck was directly in front of him. He was unable to stop in time and struck the rear bumper of the Peterbilt.

The van came to a stop in the eastbound lane following the impact. Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported Howarth to St. Catherine–Common Spirit Health for further evaluation. The driver of the Peterbilt, 58-year-old Rene Aguirre-Miramontes of Meade, was not injured.

We hope those injured in this accident recover swiftly.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Cimarron, KS - One Injured in Rear-End Crash on U50 EastboundKansas roads see thousands of crashes every year, with rear-end collisions making up a large portion of those incidents. In 2022, rear-end accidents accounted for over 25% of all reported crashes in the state.

Understanding what contributes to rear-end accidents can help prevent them. Here are some common issues that play a role:

  • Distracted Driving: One of the leading causes of rear-end collisions is distraction. Taking your eyes off the road—even for a few seconds—can make it impossible to avoid a stopped or slowing vehicle.
  • Following Too Closely: Drivers who don’t leave enough space between themselves and the vehicle ahead have less time to react in case of sudden stops. Safe driving guidelines suggest at least a three-second following distance under good conditions.
  • Sudden Stops: Trucks and other large vehicles may slow down or stop quickly to make turns. Drivers behind them may not anticipate the slowdown, especially if they’re not paying full attention.
  • Visibility & Reaction Time: Weather, sun glare, or driver fatigue can delay reaction time. Slower reaction speeds often lead to crashes that could have been avoided with better awareness.
