Shawnee, KS (January 30, 2026) – A car accident in Shawnee sent one driver to the hospital after a two-vehicle collision occurred on Thursday afternoon, January 29.
According to police, a 2014 Mazda CX-5 and a 2023 Honda CR-V were both traveling in lane 4 on the southbound side of Interstate 435 when they were involved in a crash at around 4:53 p.m. near mile marker 67, just 0.1 miles south of Johnson Drive.
Police said the Honda CR-V, driven by 77-year-old Carlos Jo Keeling of Shawnee, began moving back into lane 3. At the same time, the Mazda CX-5, operated by 42-year-old Shane Michael Patterson of De Soto, also attempted to change lanes and struck the rear of the Honda. Following the impact, the Mazda left the roadway and rolled into the center median, while the Honda came to rest on the right shoulder.
According to police, Mr. Patterson suffered injuries in the crash and went to Overland Park Regional Hospital for treatment. Mr. Keeling was not hurt. Both vehicles were later removed from the scene by Dale’s Tow. The Kansas Highway Patrol is handling the investigation into the cause of the crash.
