Three-Vehicle Car Accident in Merriam Reported on I-35

Merriam, KS (March 12, 2026) – A lane-change maneuver led to a three-vehicle car accident in Merriam on the northbound side of Interstate 35 on Wednesday afternoon, March 11, leaving multiple people injured.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m. near milepost 230, just south of Antioch Road. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2013 Toyota Highlander driven by Sunhui Fouts and a 2015 Ford F-150 driven by Mills Clark were slowing for traffic in the first lane. A 2010 BMW 328I, operated by Carlos Fuentes Capote, changed lanes from the second to the first lane and accelerated to pass another vehicle, striking the rear of the Highlander. The force of the impact caused the Highlander to rear-end the Ford F-150.

Carlos Fuentes Capote was taken to KU Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. Sunhui Fouts was transported to Saint Luke’s with injuries. Mills Clark was taken to AdventHealth with injuries.

The BMW and the Toyota sustained significant damage and were removed from the scene by Allied Towing. Both Fouts and Clark were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The Kansas Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash.

We hope Carlos Fuentes Capote, Sunhui Fouts, and Mills Clark recover quickly from their injuries.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Three-Vehicle Car Accident in Meriam Reported on I-35A chain reaction crash can unfold in seconds but leave people dealing with injuries, vehicle damage, and long insurance battles. These collisions often involve three or more vehicles and commonly occur on busy roads where traffic slows suddenly. When one driver fails to stop in time, the impact pushes vehicles forward into others, creating a domino effect.

Drivers involved in a car accident in Merriam often find themselves caught in the middle of these multi-vehicle crashes. In many cases, the front driver did nothing wrong but still suffers injuries and damage after being struck from behind.

Chain reaction collisions are particularly dangerous because multiple impacts can occur within seconds. The force of several vehicles colliding often increases the severity of injuries compared to a single rear-end crash.

Below are some of the most common reasons these accidents happen.

Common Causes of Chain Reaction Crashes

There are several reasons why a car accident in Merriam may occur. Some of the leading factors include:

  • Sudden traffic slowdowns: Heavy traffic, construction zones, and busy intersections can cause drivers to brake quickly. If a driver behind them is following too closely, they may not have enough time to stop. One impact can then push multiple vehicles into each other.
  • Distracted driving: Looking at a phone, adjusting navigation, or eating while driving can cause a driver to miss critical changes in traffic. Driving while distracted, even if only for a moment, can lead to rear-end collisions that trigger a multi-car crash.
  • Following too closely: Tailgating dramatically increases the risk of chain reaction crashes. Without enough space between vehicles, drivers have little time to react when traffic stops suddenly.
  • Poor weather or road conditions: Rain, snow, and icy roads reduce traction and increase stopping distance. Drivers who fail to slow down during hazardous weather conditions can easily lose control and crash into other vehicles.
  • Speeding in congested traffic: Driving too fast when traffic is heavy leaves little room for error. A high-speed impact in stop-and-go traffic often causes vehicles to be pushed into one another.

When several drivers are involved, determining responsibility becomes more complicated. Each driver’s actions leading up to the crash may be examined, especially if there were issues like distracted driving or unsafe following distance.
