Kansas City, KS (March 31, 2026) – A hit-and-run car accident in Kansas City on northbound Interstate 635 left two people injured and sent the at-fault driver fleeing on foot late Sunday night at approximately 11:32 p.m., near milepost 2.8, just 0.1 miles north of Metropolitan Avenue.
According to the crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2000 GMC Jimmy was traveling northbound on I-635 in the number two lane at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe. The force of the impact pushed both vehicles into the left concrete barrier wall. The GMC Jimmy rolled and came to rest on its wheels in the number one lane, while the Tahoe came to rest sideways across the number one and number two lanes.
The driver of the GMC Jimmy fled the scene on foot and remains unidentified. Insurance information for the vehicle was unknown.
The Tahoe was occupied by Antonio Hernandez-Contreras, 53, and Maria I. Reyes Navarro, 50, both of Kansas City, Kansas. Both were injured in the crash and transported to KU Medical Center for further care. Both were properly restrained at the time of the crash.
