Butterfield, MO – Freightliner Collides with Locomotive on Farm Rd 1090

Butterfield, MO (June 10, 2025) – A man was transported to a local hospital after a serious crash between a Freightliner truck and a locomotive around 12:50 p.m. on June 9. The accident occurred along Farm Road 1090, approximately one mile north of Butterfield in Barry County.

According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash took place when a northbound 2021 Freightliner truck entered the path of a westbound AR/MO Railroad diesel-electric locomotive. The area was marked by a non-electric railroad crossing sign. The Freightliner sustained total damage and had to be towed by Thomas Towing. The locomotive, which only sustained minor damage, was driven from the scene.

The 55-year-old male driver of the truck, from Cassville, Missouri, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. He sustained minor injuries and was transported by EMS to Mercy Cassville for medical care. The locomotive was operated by a 31-year-old male from Fayetteville, Arkansas, who was exempt from standard motor vehicle safety device requirements and was not injured.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident. Further information may become available as the case develops.

We hope those injured in this accident recover swiftly.

Train and Truck Accidents in Missouri

Butterfield, MO - Freightliner Collides with Locomotive on Farm Rd 1090Railroad and truck collisions in Missouri are rare but often lead to significant injuries or damage due to the size and weight of both vehicles. In recent years, Missouri has seen multiple accidents at rural railroad crossings, especially those lacking electronic warning devices. In 2023 alone, over 40 train-related crashes were reported statewide. These incidents highlight the risks associated with unguarded rail crossings and heavy freight vehicles sharing close quarters.

When dealing with truck and train collisions, several important legal and logistical concerns often come into play. Here are a few key areas to understand after such a crash:

  • Liability Across Multiple Parties: Crashes involving commercial trucks and locomotives can involve multiple liable entities—including the railroad company, trucking company, and local municipalities responsible for signage. Each of these may share responsibility depending on safety measures in place and driver actions.
  • Railroad Crossing Infrastructure: Many rural areas in Missouri use passive signage rather than electronic barriers or lights. These lower-tech systems rely on driver awareness, which can lead to serious accidents if visibility is low or if a driver is unfamiliar with the area.
  • Commercial Driver Regulations: Truck drivers are held to higher standards of responsibility and must comply with federal and state regulations. Investigations often consider whether the driver followed route planning, rest, and safety protocols prior to the crash.
  • Cargo and Load Issues: The cargo carried by commercial trucks can influence the severity of a crash. Investigators will check whether loads were properly secured and whether weight limits were exceeded.
  • Insurance Complexities: Insurance policies for trains, trucks, and drivers often vary in scope. Disputes over responsibility can delay claims and compensation for injured parties.
