Two Hurt in Motorcycle Wreck on I-635 Near Swartz Rd in Kansas City, KS

Kansas City, KS (December 31, 2025) – A Kansas City motorcycle accident involving a Harley Davidson and a hit-and-run driver left two people seriously hurt Tuesday evening, December 30.

At approximately 5:37 p.m., a 2006 Harley Davidson was traveling in lane 2 on Interstate 635 northbound just past Swartz Road in Wyandotte County. For unknown reasons, its front tire unexpectedly lifted off the road. As it landed, the rider lost control, causing the bike to fishtail and slide onto its side. The motorcycle continued to skid across the lanes toward the right shoulder, ejecting both the driver and his passenger in the process.

The passenger, 56-year-old Edwina Knoll of Merriam, was thrown into lane 3 and was struck by another vehicle, identified as a sedan, that continued northbound without stopping. Knoll came to rest in the gore area near the on-ramp from Swartz Road. The driver, 59-year-old Steven Padgett of Shawnee, was thrown into the on-ramp lane, and suffered serious injuries. Both were transported by emergency personnel to KU Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of the sedan involved in the collision with Knoll did not remain at the scene. The Kansas City Kansas Police Department is continuing the investigation into the crash.

We hope Edwina Knoll and Steven Padgett recover quickly following this accident.

Motorcycle Accidents in Kansas

Two Injured in Kansas City Motorcycle Accident on I-635Motorcycle crashes like the recent Kansas City motorcycle accident are a painful reminder of how quickly things can go wrong. Kansas sees hundreds of motorcycle accidents each year, many resulting in serious injuries.

Even though motorcycles represent only a fraction of vehicles on the road, they are overrepresented in crash statistics due to their lack of protection and increased risk of ejection. Accidents caused by defective motorcycle parts can make things even more dangerous.

When other drivers aren’t paying attention or following safety rules, the consequences for motorcyclists can be life-altering. In Kansas, comparative negligence plays a role in determining fault, which can influence compensation claims. If you’ve suffered spinal cord injuries or other serious trauma, you may be able to recover compensation for your losses.

Unfortunately, there are some common issues that contribute to serious motorcycle injuries. These include:

  • Tire and Wheel Malfunctions: A sudden lift-off or imbalance in the front tire can cause immediate loss of control that can lead to a life-changing Kansas City motorcycle accident. This could stem from a manufacturer’s defect, a worn tire, or faulty installation.
  • Other Drivers’ Inattention: Motorcycles are smaller and often overlooked. When car and truck drivers fail to check their surroundings, motorcyclists can be sideswiped, rear-ended, or struck during lane changes. In this case, the second driver’s failure to stop after hitting a fallen rider shows a serious disregard for safety and responsibility.
  • Comparative Negligence Laws: Kansas law allows injury claims even if the motorcyclist is partially at fault. If another party, like a driver or manufacturer, shares in the blame, injured riders may still recover damages under the state’s comparative negligence rule.
  • Motorcycle Instability at High Speeds: Larger bikes, like a Harley Davidson, can become unstable when tires malfunction or when the rider shifts weight abruptly. A fishtailing motion is often the first sign of lost balance before a complete loss of control occurs.
