Perry, KS – 2 Killed, 3 Seriously Injured in 3-Vehicle Crash at K-237 & US-24

Perry, KS (September 2, 2024) – A tragic three-vehicle crash in Jefferson County left two people dead and three others seriously injured on Sunday night, August 31.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the collision at 8:32 p.m. at the intersection of Kansas Highway 237 and U.S. Highway 24, about four miles west of Perry.  Police said a 2025 Hyundai Kona was driving south when it ran a stop sign and hit a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban going west on U.S. 24. The Suburban was pulling a boat trailer. The impact caused the trailer to break loose and crash into a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The driver of the Hyundai, 33-year-old Shelby Copp from Oskaloosa, died at the scene. Two children in the Hyundai were badly hurt.  A passenger in the Suburban, 66-year-old Connie Gould of Topeka, also died at the scene. The driver, 68-year-old Douglas Gould, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital. The two teens in the Silverado were not hurt. Everyone in that vehicle was wearing a seat belt.

Authorities are still investigating the crash.

We send our condolences to the families who lost loved ones, and we wish the injured a full recovery.
