Head-On Collision on Highway K16 in Jackson County, KS

Jackson County, KS (December 26, 2025) – Two people were seriously injured following a Jackson County car accident on Thursday afternoon, December 25.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 4:29 p.m. along Highway K16 near mile marker 56.8, about one-tenth of a mile east of N Road.

Reports indicate that a 2022 Subaru Forester driven by 68-year-old Denise R. White of Holton was traveling eastbound when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound 2018 Chevy Equinox driven by 80-year-old Marna G. McDowell of Onaga. The impact caused severe damage to both SUVs, and Reino’s Towing assisted in removing the vehicles from the scene.

Both women suffered suspected serious injuries. White was transported to Holton Community Hospital, while McDowell was taken to Stormont Vail in Topeka for further treatment. Authorities confirmed that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the cause of the collision.

We hope Denise White and Marna McDowell both recover quickly from their injuries.

Leading Causes of Car Accidents

Although anything can cause an accident to happen at any time, there are far too many instances where driver negligence plays a role. Some of the leading factors in accidents include:

  • Distracted Driving: Looking away from the road for even a few seconds, whether to send a text or adjust controls, can have serious consequences. These and other distracted driving actions can result in crossing the center line and causing catastrophic harm.
  • Fatigue: Driving while overly tired impairs reaction times and decision-making, similar to alcohol impairment, making it a major factor in highway crashes.
  • Speeding: High-speed travel shortens reaction time and increases the severity of collisions, especially on rural stretches without barriers or shoulders.
  • Improper Passing: Attempting to pass slower vehicles on two-lane roads often leads to fatal or severe head-on impacts when misjudging distance.
  • Weather Conditions: Rain, ice, or fog can reduce traction and visibility, increasing the likelihood of losing control or drifting into oncoming lanes.
