Overland Park, KS – Two Teens Killed in Head-On Crash on Metcalf Ave

Overland Park, KS (April 22, 2025) – An overnight crash in Overland Park claimed the lives of two teenagers and left two women injured following a head-on collision late Saturday night.

Shortly before 11:20 p.m. on April 19, a 2013 Toyota Corolla driven by a 17-year-old male was heading south on Metcalf Avenue near West 58th Street. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the vehicle crossed the center median into the path of oncoming traffic.

At that moment, a 2015 Kia Optima traveling northbound, operated by a 44-year-old woman and carrying a 41-year-old female passenger, was struck head-on by the oncoming Corolla. The force of the impact resulted in catastrophic damage to both vehicles.

Tragically, both the 17-year-old driver and his 18-year-old female passenger were killed in the crash. The 44-year-old driver of the Kia suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further care. Her passenger sustained minor injuries and was also treated.

Law enforcement is still investigating the cause of the accident and whether factors such as speed or impairment were involved. The section of Metcalf Avenue near the crash was shut down for several hours while authorities processed the scene and cleared debris.

Our sincere sympathies go out to the families of the deceased victims. We also hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Overland Park, KS - Two Teens Killed in Head-On Crash on Metcalf AveKansas experiences thousands of motor vehicle accidents each year, with many leading to serious injuries or fatalities. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, over 50,000 crashes occur annually, and a significant portion involve teen drivers or result from vehicles crossing center lines. These accidents often happen during nighttime hours and involve higher risks of severe outcomes.

Understanding how injuries happen and how lives are affected is important. Here are some contributing factors we often see in similar collisions:

  • Inexperience Among Teen Drivers: Teen drivers are at a heightened risk due to inexperience and potentially poor judgment behind the wheel. Their reaction times may be slower, and they may underestimate road hazards, increasing the likelihood of serious accidents, especially at night.
  • Cross-Median Collisions: Crashes involving vehicles that cross medians often result in head-on impacts, which are among the most dangerous types of collisions. These incidents can cause multiple severe injuries due to the combined speed and force of both vehicles involved.
  • Nighttime Driving Risks: Driving at night limits visibility and can contribute to fatigue, both of which raise the chance of an accident. Many fatal crashes occur during late evening hours when roads are darker and drivers may be less alert.
  • Injury Severity in Head-On Crashes: Head-on crashes tend to result in more serious injuries compared to other collision types. Victims may suffer from traumatic brain injuries, internal bleeding, or broken bones, which can require long-term recovery.
