Kansas City, MO – Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on Gardner Ave

Kansas City, MO (June 12, 2025) – A motorcyclist lost their life Monday night following a crash with a semi trailer at the intersection of Gardner Avenue and North Bellefontaine Avenue in Kansas City.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene shortly before 8:40 p.m. on June 9. According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the motorcyclist was riding a white and black Harley-Davidson motorcycle heading east on Gardner Avenue at a high speed when the crash happened.

At that time, a Peterbilt semi truck was attempting to turn left from northbound North Bellefontaine Avenue onto westbound Gardner Avenue. The motorcycle collided with the trailer as it turned, causing the rider and the motorcycle to slide underneath. Tragically, the rear tires of the trailer ran over the motorcyclist.

It remains unknown if the rider was wearing a helmet. Authorities have not released the motorcyclist’s name as they work to notify family members. Kansas City police are continuing their investigation into what led to the crash.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the person who lost their life in this tragedy.

Motorcycle Accidents in Missouri

Kansas City, MO - Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on Gardner AveMotorcycle crashes are often more serious than other vehicle accidents due to the limited protection a motorcycle offers its rider. In Missouri, motorcycle fatalities have remained a major concern, with the state recording over 100 motorcyclist deaths annually in recent years. Speed, inexperience, and lack of helmet use are key contributing factors in many of these incidents. Safety campaigns continue to highlight the importance of visibility and defensive driving to reduce motorcycle-related fatalities.

Many factors increase the likelihood of motorcycle crashes and injuries. Let’s take a closer look at one of the most pressing concerns:

  • Speeding: Riding at high speeds reduces reaction time and increases stopping distance. For motorcyclists, even a small miscalculation at high speeds can lead to fatal consequences. Speed was noted as a contributing factor in this particular incident, underscoring the dangers of excessive velocity on city roads.
  • Limited Visibility: Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles and can easily be missed by drivers turning or changing lanes. Intersections, like the one in this crash, are particularly dangerous for motorcyclists due to limited sightlines and timing.
  • Helmet Use: Helmets are crucial in preventing head trauma. While Missouri law allows adults to ride without helmets under certain conditions, doing so significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash.
  • Left-Turn Collisions: A large number of motorcycle crashes happen when other vehicles make left-hand turns. Motorcyclists approaching at high speeds may not be able to stop in time, especially if a turning driver misjudges their distance.
