Kansas City, MO – Ford Explorer Crashes Into Bridge Wall on I-29

Kansas City, MO (April 7, 2025) – A southbound collision on Interstate 29 left one young driver injured after a Ford Explorer struck a concrete bridge wall early Friday afternoon.

The incident took place on April 4 when two vehicles were traveling southbound on Interstate 29. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox attempted to change lanes to avoid a crash ahead. In doing so, the right side of the Equinox collided with the left side of a 2001 Ford Explorer. The impact forced the Explorer off the road, where it slammed into a bridge wall near NE 112th St.

The 19-year-old Kansas City man driving the Ford Explorer sustained minor injuries and was transported to North Kansas City Hospital by Kansas City Fire personnel. The Chevrolet driver, a 23-year-old man from Carter Lake, Iowa, was not hurt and was able to drive his vehicle away from the scene. The Explorer suffered extensive damage and had to be towed. Investigators are continuing to gather more information about the circumstances of the crash.

We hope the young man injured in this crash recovers quickly.

Car Accidents in Missouri

Kansas City, MO – Ford Explorer Crashes Into Bridge Wall on I-29Missouri sees tens of thousands of car accidents every year. In 2022 alone, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported over 131,000 crashes, with more than 47,000 resulting in injuries. These collisions are often caused by speeding, distraction, weather, or improper lane changes—like the incident described here. The risks on Missouri’s roadways make it vital to stay alert behind the wheel and be aware of your surroundings.

One important issue to understand after a crash is the common causes of car accidents in Missouri. Below are a few major contributors:

  • Improper Lane Changes: Failing to check blind spots or signal before switching lanes is a leading cause of side-swipe collisions. Sudden maneuvers—especially to avoid other accidents—can cause drivers to misjudge space or timing.
  • Distracted Driving: Cell phone use, adjusting the radio, or interacting with passengers can all pull a driver’s attention away from the road. Even a few seconds of distraction can result in serious accidents.
  • Tailgating: Following too closely reduces the time a driver has to react if the car in front stops suddenly. This often causes rear-end accidents, especially in heavy traffic.
  • Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol or drug use significantly impairs reaction time and judgment. Missouri continues to combat DUI incidents, but they remain a tragic cause of many severe crashes.
  • Weather Conditions: Rain, snow, and fog make Missouri roads slick and reduce visibility. Drivers often underestimate how much these conditions can affect their control over the vehicle.
