Joplin, MO – One Hurt After Collision on Castle Dr Involving Backing Vehicle

Joplin, MO (April 9, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash over the weekend left one woman injured after her vehicle was struck by another that was backing out of a private driveway.

The incident took place on April 6 at around 12:21 p.m., just three miles south of Joplin on Castle Drive in Newton County. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta was backing out of a private drive when the vehicle collided with the side of a southbound 2012 GMC Acadia. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The 31-year-old driver of the Acadia, a Joplin resident, suffered injuries and was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Joplin for treatment. The 46-year-old driver of the Jetta, also from Joplin, was not reported to be injured and drove her vehicle from the scene. The Acadia sustained minor damage and had to be towed. Trooper E. LeBlanc with Troop D investigated the crash and noted that both vehicles were insured.

We hope the injured driver makes a full and speedy recovery.

Car Accidents in Missouri

Joplin, MO – One Hurt After Collision on Castle Dr Involving Backing VehicleThousands of crashes occur across Missouri each year, with many resulting in injuries requiring medical attention. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, over 150,000 motor vehicle accidents occurred statewide in the last reporting year. Many of these incidents happen on residential roads or rural streets, where traffic patterns and driveways can present unique hazards for drivers.

One of the frequent causes of collisions involves improper backing. Here’s why this type of crash can be more serious than it seems:

  • Limited Visibility: Backing out of driveways or parking spots comes with natural blind spots. Even with rearview cameras, drivers often fail to see cross-traffic, pedestrians, or other vehicles. A brief lapse in attention can lead to damaging collisions or injuries, especially when another vehicle is moving at regular speed.
  • Failure to Yield While Backing: Missouri traffic laws require vehicles entering a roadway—whether from a driveway or parking space—to yield to oncoming traffic. When drivers fail to wait for a clear path, they can be held responsible for the crash. Yielding while backing is just as critical as it is at intersections.
  • Driveway and Side-Street Accidents: Crashes involving vehicles exiting private driveways are more common in residential or semi-rural areas. These roads often lack traffic signs or signals, increasing the potential for unexpected movement. Residents must be especially cautious and ensure their exit path is clear.
  • Minor Damage, Real Injuries: Even low-speed crashes can cause real harm. Whiplash, soft tissue injuries, and head impacts can all result from what might seem like a minor collision. Victims should seek medical care even if symptoms seem mild at first.

If you’ve been injured in a crash involving a backing vehicle, it’s important to speak with a Joplin car accident attorney as soon as you’re able. Insurance claims can become complicated when fault is questioned, especially in incidents that happen on private property. An attorney can gather necessary evidence, help you understand your options, and ensure you’re not left paying for someone else’s mistake.
