Independence, MO (February 20, 2026) – A 41-year-old man died after a dog attack on Wednesday, February 18, at a home on North Mohican Drive in Independence. Family members identified the victim as Tyler Brennan.
The Independence Police Department responded around 2:30 p.m. to a house in a neighborhood near Cler-Mont Elementary School. When officers entered the home, they found Brennan inside while the dog attacked him. Family members later said a Ring door camera captured Brennan briefly speaking to the dog before the camera feed stopped.
Brennan lived at the home with two friends. The dog belonged to one of the other residents. Officers confronted the animal inside the house. Police said the dog acted aggressively and caused severe injuries. An officer shot the dog twice and stopped the attack.
Officers and emergency crews provided aid and rushed Brennan to a local hospital. Doctors later pronounced him dead from his injuries.
Neighbors described the situation as heartbreaking. Police returned to the home the following day and confirmed that they continue to investigate.
