Fort Scott, KS (February 7, 2026) – A Fort Scott car accident involving an ATV and a Hyundai Elantra left three people injured on the afternoon of February 5. The crash happened around 3:38 p.m. near mile marker 59 on K39 Highway, just outside Fort Scott in Bourbon County.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2024 Polaris Sportsman 570 ATV driven by Gary M. Foster, 70, of Fort Scott, entered K-39 northbound from a field entrance. The ATV crossed both the eastbound and westbound lanes before colliding with a 2024 Hyundai Elantra traveling westbound, driven by Cheryl E. Anderson, 46, of Winfield. The crash occurred near the driveway of 1037 K39 Hwy. Upon impact, Foster was thrown from the ATV as it rolled into the westbound ditch and came to rest on its side. Officials confirmed that Foster was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Foster suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Anderson was injured and taken to Freeman Hospital in Fort Scott, along with her 14-year-old passenger, who also sustained injuries. The Elantra was towed from the scene by Dave’s Towing & Recovery.
No hit-and-run or pursuit was involved. The crash remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
