Roberto Lemus Loses Life in Fatal Crash on I-70 Near Tonganoxie, KS

Tonganoxie, KS (June 26, 2026) – A man lost his life early Thursday morning following a fatal Tonganoxie car accident along Interstate 70.

Authorities were called to the scene at approximately 1:13 a.m. on June 25 along westbound I-70 about five miles east of the Tonganoxie exit on the Kansas Turnpike. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash involved a 2016 Jeep Wrangler and a 2019 Honda Civic.

Investigators reported that the Jeep, driven by 31-year-old Allan Selley of Independence, Missouri, was traveling westbound in the left lane when it made an unsafe lane change into the right lane. During that movement, the Jeep struck the rear of the Honda Civic.

The impact forced the Honda, operated by 44-year-old Roberto Lemus of Kansas City, Kansas, off the roadway. The vehicle traveled into a ditch, struck a delineator post, and continued into a nearby tree line. Lemus was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Selley was not injured in the collision and was also reported to have been wearing a seat belt. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles when the accident occurred.  The crash remains under review by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Roberto Lemus during this difficult time.

Car Accidents in Kansas

Roberto Lemus Loses Life in Fatal Tonganoxie Car AccidentFatal crashes across Kansas continue to impact families and communities each year, especially along major highways like Interstate 70, where higher speeds and heavy traffic increase the risk of serious collisions.

A fatal Tonganoxie car accident can leave families facing emotional loss and unexpected financial burdens. In some cases, loved ones may seek accountability through a wrongful death lawyer after a fatal Tonganoxie car accident to help address financial and legal concerns that follow a loss.

Understanding how fatal Tonganoxie car accidents occur can help raise awareness and encourage safer driving habits. The following factors are often associated with serious and fatal collisions:

  • Unsafe Lane Changes: Sudden or poorly timed lane changes can create dangerous conditions, especially on highways. Drivers must ensure there is enough space and time to safely move between lanes. When this judgment is off, fatal Tonganoxie car accidents can happen quickly and with significant force.
  • High-Speed Impact: Travel on highways like I-70 involves high speeds, which increase the severity of crashes. Even a single mistake can result in life-altering consequences due to the energy involved in high-speed collisions.
  • Vehicle Departure from Roadway: When a vehicle is forced off the roadway, it may encounter uneven terrain, ditches, or fixed objects. These secondary impacts often contribute to more serious injuries or even a fatal Tonganoxie car accident.
  • Nighttime Driving Conditions: Reduced visibility in early morning hours can make it harder to detect hazards. Drivers must remain alert and cautious when traveling at night to reduce the likelihood of collisions.

If your family has been affected by a fatal Tonganoxie car accident, it is important to understand that you have options moving forward.
