Pittsburg, KS (December 22, 2025) – A man was killed early Sunday morning in a fatal Pittsburg pedestrian accident after being struck by a vehicle in Cherokee County, just southeast of Pittsburg.
At around 12:22 a.m. on December 21, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene near South 260th Street and 510th Avenue. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that a pedestrian was struck by a 2020 Hyundai Elantra.
The victim, identified as 37-year-old Nicklas Thompson of Pittsburg, succumbed to his injuries while at the scene. The driver of the Elantra, 54-year-old Melinda Canet, also from Pittsburg, was transported to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries. Authorities confirmed she was wearing her seatbelt and was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Investigators have not yet shared additional details about the circumstances that led to the crash. It remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
