Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Car Accident in Missouri?Two-Car Crash Leaves Driver Injured on 92 Hwy East of Mt Olivet Rd

In Missouri, the at-fault driver typically pays for medical bills after a car accident through their liability insurance coverage. Missouri follows a fault-based insurance system, which means the driver who caused the crash bears financial responsibility for injuries and damages. An injured person may file a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance policy to seek payment for medical expenses.

After a collision, medical costs can include ambulance transport, emergency room visits, imaging tests, follow-up appointments, and physical therapy. Even injuries labeled as “minor” may require ongoing care. Some people experience neck pain, back soreness, or headaches hours after an accident. Keeping detailed medical records and billing statements helps document these expenses clearly.

Missouri also follows a pure comparative fault rule. This means insurance companies may review the crash report, vehicle damage, and driver statements to assign a percentage of fault to each party. If an injured driver shares part of the blame, compensation may decrease by that percentage. For example, if a driver holds 20 percent responsibility, any financial recovery may reduce by 20 percent.

In some cases, injured drivers first use their own health insurance to cover immediate treatment while a liability claim moves forward. Medical payments coverage, if included in an auto policy, may also help cover short-term expenses. A car accident attorney can review insurance policies, explain how fault laws apply, and outline what types of compensation may be available under Missouri law.
