Car Accidents in Missouri

Chilhowee, MO - Pedestrian Struck on Bus 13 HwyCar collisions in Missouri remain a serious public safety issue. According to recent state records, Missouri sees over 150,000 vehicle crashes annually, resulting in more than 80,000 injuries and over 900 fatalities each year. Many of these incidents involve impaired or distracted driving, and pedestrian-related crashes have accounted for nearly 15% of total traffic fatalities. With roadways like Business 13 serving as both commuter and rural travel routes, risk factors rise significantly. It is crucial to understand common dangers, legal rights, and available protections.

Here are some key concerns Missourians should know:

  • Impact of Poor Lighting Conditions: Rural highways often lack sufficient streetlights, and visibility drops at dawn, dusk, or during inclement weather. When drivers fail to see pedestrians on shoulders or in crosswalks, the chance of serious collisions increases markedly. Awareness campaigns and improved roadway lighting can reduce these risks.
  • Common Pedestrian Injuries: Victims hit by vehicles on high-speed roads often suffer fractures, traumatic brain injuries, and internal bleeding. These injuries can lead to prolonged hospital stays, rehabilitation, and long-term disability. Early medical intervention improves recovery outcomes significantly.
  • Distracted Driving’s Role: Using phones or in-car infotainment systems diverts drivers’ attention, causing delayed braking or drifting off-road. Studies show distraction is a factor in around 25% of Missouri crashes. Awareness and enforcement of hands-free laws help, but driver accountability remains vital.
  • Liability in Rural Crash Zones: Determining fault in pedestrian–vehicle crashes on rural roads often hinges on roadway design, speed limits, and whether proper shoulder signage or crosswalks were in place. Expert accident reconstruction and legal insight are frequently needed to identify negligence or safety violations.
