Wyandotte County, KS (June 3, 2026) – Several people were transported to area hospitals with injuries following a Kansas City car accident that took place on Tuesday evening along Interstate 70. The crash occurred on June 2 at approximately 5:45 p.m. on I-70 Eastbound near milepost 423, just before the state line in Wyandotte County.
According to investigators, a 2002 Honda Civic was stopped in the eastbound lane when it was struck from behind by a 2009 Toyota Yaris. After impact, the Honda came to rest on the right shoulder of the highway while the Toyota stopped on the left shoulder. The incident has been classified as an injury crash and a hit-and-run. Authorities confirmed that no police pursuit was involved. The crash was investigated by unit K470.
The driver of the Honda Civic was listed as unknown and reported no apparent injury at the scene. The vehicle was removed by Heartland Tow.
The driver of the Toyota Yaris was identified as 26-year-old Lamonte Bernell Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri. He sustained injuries and was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital for treatment. Two young passengers were also injured in the crash. A 2-year-old child and a 4-year-old child were both transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital for medical care. Layani and Soraya were reported to have been properly restrained at the time of the collision, while Lamonte Johnson was not using a safety restraint. The Toyota Yaris was also removed from the scene by Heartland Tow. At this time, the Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
